Simple Enough

Great post at Social Design on Gall’s Law:

“A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. The inverse proposition also appears to be true: A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be made to work. You have to start over, beginning with a working simple system.”

Managing to simplicity is a reliable way to work complex projects to achieve transformative results. One way we’ve articulated this to clients is “Start small and build on your success”. In other words, achieve basic success metrics before adding features.

Or, as Albert Einstein once said, “Any fool can make things bigger and more complex. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage - to move in the opposite direction.”
